Mavrovo Lake

The Mavrovosee ( Macedonian Mavrovsko ežero Мавровско Езеро; Albanian Liqeni Mavrovës i ) is created in the mid-20th century artificial lake in western Macedonia. It belongs to Opština Gostivar and is situated in the Mavrovo National Park in the Mavrovo region, as well as in the Mavrovo Valley. The surrounding mountain ranges reach heights of up to 2000 meters above the Adriatic and belong partly to the mountain massif of the Šar Planina (north) and to that part of the Bistra (south). This is only 20 miles as the crow flies west from the lake. 13.7 km ² water surface of Mavrovosee one of the larger lakes in the country. At its deepest point is 48 meters deep.

Mavrovi Anovi, Leunovo, Nikiforovo and Mavrovo among the lakeside resorts of the lake. In these villages together some 340 permanent inhabitants.

Inflows and outflows

The dam at the lakeside village Mavrovi Anovi dammed the Mavrovska Reka at about 1230 m above sea level. A. which opens into the radicalization after about 10 kilometers. This in turn leads further into the Debarsee. Other major tributaries of the Mavrovosees are the Leunska Reka, Reka and the Petilepska the Kakačka Reka ( named from north to south).

History

With the congestion of the big Mavrovo Reka Mavrovska valley filled with water, thus making the Mavrovosee, which is 10 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. 1957, a hydroelectric plant was built in Vrutok northeast of the lake near Gostivar, which is operated by a five-kilometer -long canal with about 600 meters higher lake. 1959 came more power plants in Raven - north of Vrutok - and in Vrben - near the dam - to do so. All three have a production capacity of 390 million kilowatt hours per year.

Tourism

The Mavrovosee is a popular resort area, along with the surrounding mountain areas. In the summer come swimming and hiking tourists; in winter there are snow sports in the ski Zare Lazarevski above the village of Mavrovo.
