Max Fiedler

August Max Fiedler ( born December 31, 1859 in Zittau, Upper Lusatia, † December 1, 1939 in Stockholm ) was a German conductor, composer and pianist.

He was taught by his father, the Sorbian music teacher Karl August Fiedler, and later at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1877 to 1880 with G. Albrecht. From 1882 to 1908 he worked at the Hamburg Conservatory as a professor. In 1904 he was there also conductor of the Philharmonic. He undertook extensive concert tours. After his debut in America in 1905, he frequently appeared with the New York Philharmonic. From 1908 to 1912 Fiedler was director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After his return to Germany he became General Music Director of the city of Essen. He held until 1934 this office. In his last years he worked as a guest conductor, especially in Berlin and Stockholm.
