Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology is a research institute of the Max Planck Society in Plön and dedicated to the evolution basic biological research. It is currently divided into the areas of evolution, ecology, and evolutionary genetics.

History

The Institute has existed in its present form since March 2007. Previously, the Institute was named MPI for Limnology. Precursor institutions were founded in 1891 by Emil Otto Zacharias Biological Station at Plon, which was acquired in 1917 by the Kaiser Wilhelm Society as Hydrobiological Institute under the direction of August Thienemann. The German Sundaexpedition of 1928/29, at the Thienemann was instrumental, marks the beginning of tropical limnology. The Hydrobiological Institute was taken over by the Max Planck Society in 1948. The " Fulda Station" (later Limnological River Station) in the Hessian slot was connected to the Institute in 1949 as a branch. 1957 Harald Sioli executive director and independent head of the Hydrological Institute. It was in 1966 renamed the Max Planck Institute for Limnology with the departments of General Limnology ( Jürgen Overbeck ) and Tropical Ecology (Harald Sioli ). In 1978 the retirement Siolis. 1984, the Department of Ecophysiology was established, headed by Winfried Lampert and established the Tropical Ecology Working Group under Wolfgang Junk. After the retirement of Overbeck 1991, Limnological River Station was Peter Zwick for independent working group.

1999, the Department of Evolutionary Ecology was established under the direction of Manfred Milinski. This, as well as with the retirement of Winfried Lampert and the retirement of Peter Zwick, the closure of the Limnological River Station as well as the establishment of the Department of Evolutionary Genetics, headed by Diethard Tautz in 2006 there was a major upheaval. Plön Institute was renamed with Senate resolution of March 2007 Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. Wolfgang Junk went into retirement in 2007, the Tropical Ecology Working Group was disbanded. In 2008, the self- Emmy Noether Junior Research Group (DFG ) "Evolutionary Dynamics " took under the leadership of Arne Traulsen for their work. 2009 was appointed as part of the Cluster of Excellence " Inflammation at Interfaces" John Baines as a joint professor at the University of Kiel and the MPI. In 2010, the Max Planck Research Group "Experimental Evolution" under the direction of Duncan Greig on their work.

The next development step is the appointment of the Head of the new Department of Evolutionary theory and the extensions for animal husbandry.

International Max Planck Research School ( IMPRS )

The Institute is involved in the International Max Planck Research School for Evolutionary Biology, an English doctoral program. Other partners in the IMPRS are the University of Kiel and the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. Speaker of the IMPRS are Diethard Tautz (MPI) and Hinrich Schulenburg (University of Kiel).
