Max Zimmermann

Max Zimmermann (* July 7, 1811 in Zittau, † December 29, 1878 in Munich) was a German painter.

August Maximilian Zimmermann, as he was known by its full name, was the younger brother of the painter Albert Zimmermann and the older brother of painter Robert and Richard Zimmermann. He first began a career as a musician and then turned to lithography. In 1834 he went to Dresden, where he saw good prospects for this technique. It was not until 1837 he followed his older brother to Munich, to devote himself in his early painting school of the renowned Landschafterei.

His landscapes are characterized by strong color and serious mood; particularly appreciated are its oak pictures. Role models were his Dutch master Meindert Hobbema and Ruisdael. He has also performed beautiful forest etchings. Zimmermann died in Munich, where he had lived too long. However, a hand injury ended his career back in the early seventies.
