Maximiliano Rubén Rodríguez ( born January 2, 1981 in Rosario ) is an Argentine football player. He plays since July 2012 when CA Newell 's Old Boys in the Argentine Primera División.

Career

Association

The attacking midfielder started his career in Argentina in the Apertura season 1999/2000 at Newell 's Old Boys. In 2002 he moved for a transfer fee of around six million euros to Spain Espanyol Barcelona. He scored in three seasons in La Liga total of 26 goals, including 15 in the season 2004/2005. He then moved to Atlético Madrid. After the change of Fernando Torres Rodriguez was appointed as the new captain of the people of Madrid.

On 13 January 2010 Rodriguez moved to the English Premier League and hired at Liverpool. He wrote there a dated contract until June 2013. For the Reds, he completed 73 games and scored 17 goals.

On July 14, 2012, announced that Maxi Rodríguez changes for an undisclosed fee back to his home to Newell's Old Boys.

National

With the Argentine U-20 national team Rodríguez was 2001 World Champion. His debut in the senior team, he was on 8 June 2003, a 4-1 against Japan in Osaka, when he came on in the 76th minute for Solari. Thereafter, however, he was employed by coach Marcelo Bielsa only sporadically. His successor, José Pekerman nominated him for the Confederations Cup in 2005, where he reached the final with Argentina.

He also participated in the Football World Cup 2006, scoring three goals, including the winning goal against Mexico in the second round. Since he became violent after losing the quarter-final match against Germany against Bastian Schweinsteiger, FIFA detained him for two competitive games and a fine of 3050 euros (5000 francs) was imposed on him.
