Maximilian Reichsgraf von Hamilton

Maximilian of Hamilton (Czech: Maxmilián z Hamiltonu; * March 17, 1714 in Munich, † October 31, 1776 in Kremsier ) was Prince-Bishop of Olomouc.

Life

His parents were Julius Francis of Hamilton, Bavarian Elector and Councilor Maria Ernestina, née Stahrenberg. His grandfather Jacob born in England of Hamilton from a Scottish family received in 1695 the kingdom earldom and 1698 the Moravian Inkolat.

Maximilian studied in Ettal and 1734-1738 at the Roman Sapienza, where he in 1737 Dr. iur. utr. received his doctorate. After ordination in 1738 he was working pastorally and in 1747 canon Olomouc, 1751 Rector of St. Anne's Chapel at the appointed Olomouc Cathedral and Vicar General in 1758. After the death of Prince-Bishop Leopold Friedrich of Egkh and Hungerbach the Olomouc Cathedral Chapter elected him as his successor.

Maximilian led the diocesan visitation, begun under Bishop Julius Ferdinand Troyer to an end, leaving in 1772 to create a list of those places where new parishes were to be built. The list served as the basis for the negotiations of the Vienna government with the Holy See on a new diocesan division of Moravia, with the diocesan boundaries should be adjusted to the changed state borders. After most of Silesia was dropped in 1742 to Prussia, lying in Austrian Silesia area proportion of the Archdiocese of Breslau was a new diocese Opava incorporated and from parts of South Moravia Brno a bishopric be established. Because of these intentions, the government in Vienna in 1773 procured a papal breve, which prohibited the free choice after the death of the incumbent bishop to Olomouc Cathedral Chapter and after the death of Maximilian, who had been buried in the Olomouc Cathedral, became effective three years later.
