Maxwell William Ward, OC, AOE ( born November 21, 1921 in Edmonton, Alberta ) is a Canadian aviation pioneer and founder of the eponymous airline Wardair Canada.

Life

Maxwell ( Max ) W. Ward entered 1940 in the Royal Canadian Air Force ( RCAF ) and was christened on November 18, 1941 his pilot's license. In the following years he trained military pilots for the war effort in Europe. After the Second World War, Ward left the RCAF and worked as a bush pilot in northern Canada. In June 1946, he founded the company in Yellowknife Polaris Charter Company that performed transport flights in the Northwest Territories. Since the company had no approval from the competent Authority Air Transport Board ( ATB), Ward entered into a close cooperation with the Yellowknife Airways in May 1947. As this co-operation in October 1949 broke, he returned with his family back to Alberta and worked as a sales representative and Maurer, until he was again working as a bush pilot in May 1951.

In July 1952 Max Ward founded the company Wardair Limited and applied at the same time a charter license for the company. In May 1953 it was clear that the ATB would grant an approval, he acquired a factory new de Havilland Canada DHC -3, with the Wardair on June 3, 1953 resumed its flight operations. Initially, Ward concentrated on the transport of people and supplies for the mining industry. From 1962, he graduated from international charter flights, which quickly developed into the most important business branch. On September 18, 1967, he brought the Wardair to the stock market and thus procured the funds for further expansion. After the IPO, Ward held 73 percent of the shares and remained as managing directors. He sat down heavily on the deregulation of the Canadian aviation and built the Wardair continuously the third largest airline in Canada from. On April 28, 1989, he sold his shares in the airline Canadian Airlines International and retired from professional life.
