City

In the 16th century a village Mažeikiai is mentioned that with the start of construction of the railway line Liepāja Romny and the train station was 1868, the basis for a settlement, which was expanded later to a city. 1905 Mažeikiai was a parish and even before the First World War a city. End of 1919, the district administration has moved from Seda by Mažeikiai.

The Polish oil company PKN Orlen bought on 9 June 2006 30.66 % of Mažeikių Nafta, the only refinery in the Baltic States, for $ 852 million. There was ORLEN Lietuva.
