History

McAfee VirusScan can look back on a long history. The virus scanner has been around since the late 1980s, at that time as a pure command line program for MS -DOS. At that time there were only a few hundred viruses and few alternative virus scanner. Accordingly, the program was popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was still being distributed as shareware and was, for example, via mailboxes (BBS ) available. Except for the indication that it is an unregistered version, but there was hardly user features. In addition to this there was a separate program the " virus guard " VShield some background on-access scanner.

Criticism

In tests of Virus Bulletin is to be read from a lack of recognition rate with some known viruses. In a report by CNET VirusScan 2006 is mentioned, that the performance to be desired and a complete system scan would take a long time. PC World called as positive in McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010 a good signature-based malware detection, but also criticizes existing performance problems.
