McAfee [ mækəfi ː ] is an American manufacturer of antivirus and computer security software. The company is since 2011 a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel. McAfee is named after its founder John McAfee, and was founded in 1987 as McAfee Associates.

In 1997, McAfee concluded with Network General to Network Associates (NAI ) together. After a further restructuring and focus on the business network security, the company was renamed again back to McAfee, until then, this name has only been used as a product name. Other parts of the company, such as Sniffer technology, were hived in this course and found in a business venture with the old company name Network General a place.

In August 2010, Intel announced that it would take for 7.68 billion U.S. dollars McAfee to combine hardware and software in the security area better. The U.S. competition authorities approved the FTC in December 2010. On January 26, 2011, the EU Commission issued under conditional approval for the business. On 28 February 2011, the acquisition was completed. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California.

Early 2014 announced Intel, set the McAfee brand by the end of the year and be replaced by Intel Security.
