McCoy Mrubata

McCoy Mrubata ( born June 1, 1959 in Cape Town ) is a South African jazz musician ( tenor and alto saxophone, Saxello, flute).

Life and work

Mrubata, who took an early interest in music, until 1976 Flute began to learn. Since 1979 he has worked as a professional musician. He first played with Duke and Ezra Ngcukana and Spencer Mbadu in the fusion band Fever, then with other bands of the Cape jazz. Later he went with Sipho Mabuse on tour and worked with Ray Phiri Stimela. In 1988 he received the opportunity to record his debut album in the UK Firebird with his band. In 1992 he toured with Hugh Masekela, before he concentrated on his own bands such as Cape to Cairo or McCoy 's Friends. From 1995 he was able to upload their own albums in South Africa. In addition to Paul Hanmer, Sipho Gumede, Errol Dyers and Frank Paco he made also the Sheer All Stars. He also worked with Pops Mohamed, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. In Oslo Nordic Black Theatre he appeared in 2001 in two musicals that clustered round Bob Marley. In a third musical Beyond the Blues: the John Coltrane story, he played the lead role. In 2009, he toured in Switzerland in a duo with pianist Paul Hanmer.

Prizes and awards

1990 Mrubata received with his band for his debut album, the price Gilbey 's Music for Africa. In 2003 he was awarded for his album Face the Music with a South African Music Award ( SAMA ). In 2005 he received another SAMA for his album Icamagu Livumile.
