Mečislovas Gedvilas

Mečislovas ( Mečys ) Gedvilas ( born November 19, 1901 in Bubiai in Šiauliai, † February 15, 1981 in Vilnius ) was a sowjetlitauischer politician, member of the Communist Party of Lithuania ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partija ) and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR.

Life

After school he completed a teaching degree, after its termination, he was from 1923 to 1927 taught at the secondary school of Palanga.

In 1934 he joined the Lithuanian Communist Party ( Lietuvos Komunistų Partijos ). On 14 July 1940 he was a deputy of the National Assembly ( Liaudies Seimas ) that a week later the accession of Lithuania to the Soviet Union agreed. At this time he also acted as People's Commissar of Internal Affairs and then briefly vice president of the Seimas Liaudies.

After joining, he was on August 25, 1940 Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars and thus de facto first Prime Minister of the Lithuanian SSR. After renaming this committee on April 2, 1946, he was then Chairman of the Council of Ministers. During his reign there was a fundamental Sovietization of Lithuania, which ultimately resulted in the denationalization of the previously independent Republic.

Successor as Prime Minister was on January 16, 1956 Motiejus Šumauskas, in whose government he was like under Prime Minister Juozas Maniūšis to 1973, Minister of Education.
