Medicago littoralis

Medicago littoralis, flowering plant with unripe fruits

Medicago littoralis is a species of the genus alfalfa (Medicago ).

Description

Medicago littoralis is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height 10-15 inches.

The alternate and spirally arranged, petiolate leaves are pinnate three parts. The leaflets are inverted - triangular to obovate. The Spreitenrand is cut in the upper part. The spreading hairy on both sides are tight. The stipules are denticulate.

The racemose inflorescences bear 2-5 butterfly flowers. The inflorescence axis is a third longer than the petiole of the adjacent sheet.

The legumes are helically rolled and thorny. The screws are small, cylindrical and glabrous. The spines are 4-5 millimeters long and are at an angle of 90 ° to 120 ° to Windungsoberfläche. Each sleeve contains three seeds.

Dissemination

The species is native to the Mediterranean and occurs both in the European Mediterranean countries, as well as in the Middle East and North Africa. She is also on the Canary Islands, distributed on the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Neophyte reserves are found on the east coast of the United States and in Western and South Australia.

Ecology

Medicago littoralis lives in a mutualistic symbiosis with nodule bacteria ( Rhizobiaceae ) Sinorhizobium meliloti. This has the capacity to bind elemental molecular nitrogen.

Culture

The species is used as fodder plants, while it can be processed into both hay and silage. The proceeds are then at 1.2 to 5 tons of forage per acre or 0.4 to 2.6 tons of hay per acre.
