Medusandra

Medusandra is a plant genus of the family of Peridiscaceae. The two species of this genus are native only to the tropics of the Western Africa.

Description

Medusandra species are deciduous trees with yellow latex. The alternate, long -stalked leaves are large and easy to put together ( If one conceives the leaves as composed, they have only a pinnate leaf on ). The leaf margin is slightly serrated. The stipules are small.

The hanging, kitten -like, racemose inflorescence has small bracts. The small radial symmetry flowers are hermaphroditic and fünfzählig. The five sepals remain attached to the fruit. The five free petals are small. In two circles are five free stamens; they are very unevenly shaped and five are converted to long staminodes. The three (or four) carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. The three (or four) short stylus are not fused, with small scars. The leathery, dreikammerigen fruit capsules contain only a large seed.

System

The inclusion of the genus has long been unclear at times they were performed in a separate family Medusandraceae. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, 2009 they presented the Peridiscaceae family.
