Meerzorg ( Sranan Tongo: Ansoe ) is a place resort and former plantation in Suriname, in the district Commewijne on the right bank of the Suriname and the capital Paramaribo.

History

The plantation Meerzorg was 1,700, probably initially created as a sugar cane plantation, by Paul Amsincq. From the senior's name the Surinamese Ansoe name is derived. Circa 1720 was cultured on Meerzorg the first coffee in Suriname. By no later than 1821, the production was then converted back to sugar cane. After the abolition of slavery in Suriname in 1863 and the expiration of the subsequent ten-year work requirement for the former slaves Hindustani and Javanese contract transformants were recruited as laborers. The plantation economy was discontinued circa 1910.

Privateer

When the French privateer Jacques Cassard Suriname in 1712 raided the plantation Meerzorg was the scene of the action. After a first attack of Cassard had failed on the colony in June 1712 he had the beginning of October of the same year with a revised strategy to be more successful. He ran his 3,000 soldiers past aboard warships in Paramaribo and took in a short time almost all plantations on the Suriname. Paul Amsincq and his family was in the night, fled shortly before the capture by the buccaneers across the river to Paramaribo. On Meerzorg Cassard established his headquarters.

Just three weeks later showed the government. To prevent further looting of the colony by Cassard, signed emissaries of the Governor on 27 October Meerzorg an agreement with the French. As ransom ( arson ), the value of annual production in the colony was established. This corresponded to the time an amount of 620,000 Dutch guilders.

The place

Until the completion of the first bridge over the Suriname in Paramaribo Paramaribo in 2000 and Meerzorg was only connected by a ferry. The town is dominated by the former indentured laborers from Asia and small farming.
