Resorts of Suriname

As a department ( region ) administrative units are referred to in Suriname, in which a district is divided. The 10 districts of Suriname are divided into a total of 62 departments.

There are the departments mainly from districts in the other districts of a larger contiguous area, from villages, towns and old plantations within the capital Paramaribo District. Average a resort is approximately 2,600 square kilometers and has approximately 8,000 inhabitants. Although all departments in Paramaribo are small by their surface ago, the number of inhabitants per department here generally much higher than in the sparsely populated inland.

The Regional Administration is stipulated in the Basic Law of Suriname from Article 159. Thereafter, the Ressortrat is formally the highest political and administrative organ of a resort. The council members are elected for a period of five years as members of the District Council and the deputies of the National Assembly of Suriname ( De Nationale Assemblée ).
