Brokopondo District

Brokopondo is a district in Suriname. It is bordered on the north by the district of Para and to the district Sipaliwini.

The establishment of the district Brokopondo goes back to the State Ordinance No. 104 of December 31, 1958, and originally included an area of ​​21,440 square kilometers. The number of inhabitants was recorded in the census in 1972: 17,763 with a population density of 0.83.

The district is known by the Blommesteinsee ( dam and power plant at Afobaka ), which produces much of the consumed energy in Suriname. In addition, in Brokopondo are several nature reserves with rainforest vegetation.

In Brokopondo is the Caribbean village Cabendadorp.

For some time, gold is mined in the district again. This means that more and more people migrate in this district, not only from Suriname, but also (mostly illegal) from Brazil.

In parliament ( Assemblée Nationale De ) is represented with three deputies of the district Brokopondo.
