Para District

Para

Para is a district in the north of Suriname. In the north, bordering the districts Saramacca Wanica and Commewijne, in the south with the districts Brokopondo and Sipaliwini, in the east of the district Marowijne to the district of Para.

History and Tourism

A tourist destination in the district is the Jodensavanne, a place that was founded in the 17th century originally fled from Spain Jews. 1685 here one of the first raised brick synagogue in the New World was built, the ruins of which can still be seen. The Jodensavanne on Suriname in 1832 almost completely destroyed by fire. At this time, the place and the scale plantations there were already left and the residents mostly drawn to Paramaribo. During the Second World War here a camp was built, in which from September 1942 some 150 alleged or actual supporters of the Nationaal - Socialistische Beweging ( NSB) were interned in the Dutch East Indies. Policy and administrative divisions

In parliament ( Assemblée Nationale De ) is represented by three deputies of the district of Para.

The District Para is in turn divided into the following five departments ( decentralized):

  • North Para
  • Oost- Para
  • South Para
  • Bigi Poika
  • Carolina

Economy and Transport

The economy is dominated by the bauxite mining and forestry. In Brazil there are important bauxite mining and production of the country.

In the district of Para, in Zanderij is also home to the largest airport in the country, the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport.
