Commewijne District

Commewijne is a district in Suriname. In the west, the district is bordered by Suriname, to the east by the district Marowijne.

The main industry is agriculture, which is operated in the area since the beginning of the Dutch colonization in the 17th century (in the form of plantation agriculture ).

From the colonial period still produced some remains of smaller forts in Commewijne. The most important of these is located in the main town of the District of Nieuw -Amsterdam and has been designed to be an open air museum.

In parliament ( Assemblée Nationale De ) is represented by four deputies of the district Commewijne.
