Zanderij

Zanderij on the map of Suriname

Zanderij is a village in Suriname. It is located in the department of South Para Para in the district just west of the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport and about 40 kilometers south of the capital Paramaribo.

The village has about 200 inhabitants, who are predominantly employed as a worker at the airport. Before the construction of the airport, there were almost exclusively Caribs. He is the " Zanderijsavanne " and takes its name from the sand that is mined here for the manufacture of glass.

On June 7, 1989 crash of SLM - flight PY 764 at Zanderij. In the momentous flight accident of history Surinamese 176 people, including the football player Lloyd Doesburg died.

Since 2007 Zanderij has a new polyclinic.
