Meghnad Saha

Meghnad Saha ( Bengali: মেঘনাদ সাহা, Meghnad Saha, born October 6, 1893 in Sheoratali, now Bangladesh, † February 16, 1956 in Delhi ) was an Indian physicist.

He began his studies at the University of Calcutta. One of his teachers was Satyendranath Bose. He soon specialized in astrophysics and plasma physics and provided significant contributions to the ionized matter into stars.

After the First World War, he came to Europe and worked especially in London, where he became a member of the Royal Society. He also spent some time in Berlin on Nernst Institute.

The most important result of his research is named after him Saha equation, which describes the thermodynamic equilibrium of a plasma. John Eggert had his preparatory work in 1919 published in German in physical journal. Saha read this work in India and could significantly improve, resulting in a significant breakthrough resulted in the understanding of the physics of stars.

In the 1930s, Saha went back to India and taught at the University of Calcutta. He promoted in particular the development of nuclear physics in India.

Later, he was also active politically and became a member of the Indian Parliament.
