In the preface to the first edition, which is dated October 1, 1899 Publisher Eduard Riecke performs a purpose of the new journal, and particularly describing the intended position on the prestigious Annalen der Physik. Frequency of publication and publisher

The first volume of the journal runs from 1 October 1899 to the end of September 1900, it is edited by E. Riecke (Göttingen) and H. Th Simon (Frankfurt). Simon also takes on the editorial staff. There appear 52 booklets ( " Numbers" ) with 16 pages. 1915 Riecke is replaced by Peter Debye, the editors share Busch, Max Born and Simon.
