Melanthus

Melanthus (Greek Μέλανθος ), the son of Andropompos, in Greek mythology, king of Messenia.

He was expelled from the Heraclidae Temenos and Cresphontes. That's why he left Pylos (see also " Palace of Nestor " ), and finally came to Athens.

While Melanthus in Athens was called the Boeotians Xanthos Thymoites, king of Attica, to a fight. Since he refused, fought against Melanthus Xanthos and defeated him in a duel. Then he pushed Thymoites from the throne and became king of Attica. This deception is the reason why a festival that Apaturia ( Greek: απάτη = deception ) was called, was celebrated in Attica.

Melanthus is considered the founder of the dynasty of Melanthiden. His son Kodros was after him king of Attica.
