Melchior Paul von Deschwanden

Melchior Paul von Deschwanden ( born January 10, 1811 in Stans, † February 25, 1881 in Stans ) was a Swiss painter of Nazarenerstils.

Life

Deschwanden attended his first drawing lessons from Louis Victor, he learned 1825/26 with Johann Kaspar Moos ( * 1774, † 1835) in train in 1827 with Daniel Albert Freudweiler and Johann Caspar Schinz in Zurich in 1830 at the Munich Academy.

1835/36 he attended a language course in Lausanne and was in contact with Reformed pietists. 1838 to 1840 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he grappled with the works of Fra Angelico and won a 1st prize for a running in oil male nude.

The local encounter with the German Nazarenes, Friedrich Overbeck was crucial for Deschwandens ecclesiastical- religious sense of mission, which he henceforth devoted his life and his work. After returning to Switzerland, he served as the first church order from the altarpieces for Peter Chapel in Lucerne.

In 1842 he made ​​the acquaintance of the Düsseldorf School of Painting and visited works of the Austrian artist Eduard von Steinle, a successful painter in the Nazarene Church.

In Munich he saw in 1845 the murals of the Nazarene influenced classicist Peter von Cornelius in Ludwig's Church and attended his pupil, the history painter and portraitist Wilhelm von Kaulbach.

The talented portrait painter Deschwanden turned increasingly to the sacral painting. Technically brilliant, he created a simple visual compositions with expressive figures in a devotional style.

Deschwandens factory covers about 2000 paintings, including numerous altarpieces.

He died ( later called American Adolfo Müller- Ury 1862-1947 ) in the arms of his pupil Felice Adolfo Müller.
