Menachem Porush

Menachem Porush ( born April 2, 1916 in Jerusalem, † February 22, 2010 ) was an ultra-Orthodox rabbi and Israeli politician.

Biography

After schooling completed a Jewish studies at Yeshiva " Etz Haim " and then worked as a journalist. As such, he was initially 1932-1938 reporter for the daily newspaper haredi abroad.

After the establishment of Israel, he was from 1949 to 1963 editor of the radio institution Kol Israel and briefly from 1950 to 1951 editor of the newspaper HaMevaser. At the same time he became involved social and socio- political and was not only the founder of a network of child care centers as well as a founder and the staff of the educational institution "Independent Education".

His political career began in 1954 with his election as a member of the Central Administration of the orthodox party Agudat Jisra'el, whose chairman he was in 1955.

On November 30, 1959 he was a candidate of the Agudat Jisra'el that part of the electoral alliance Religious Torah Front ( Hazit Datit Toratit ), was first elected to the Knesset members, which he initially until after his re- election in 1961, 1965, 1969 and 1974 belonged to 23 November 1975. During this time he was usually a member of the Committees on Constitution, Law and Justice and of Education and Culture.

Menachem Porush was also between 1969 and 1974 vice-mayor of Jerusalem and thus representative of Teddy Kollek. During this time he founded in 1973 and Kiryat HaYeled, a center for the education of ultra - orthodox Jewish children and was founded in 1977 and Alternate President of the National Centre of Agudat Jisra'el.

In the following years he was a member of the Knessetausschüssen of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Finance, Home Affairs and the Environment and the Ausschutz against drug abuse as a member, before November 19, 1990 until July 13, 1992, in turn, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare in the Cabinet was by Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.

As a longtime chairman of the Agudat Jisra'el he was known as a leader of the ultra-Orthodox minority in the Jewish community, who vehemently campaigned against secularization in Israel as well as the enforcement of a strict Jewish law. His son Meir Porush is also a member of the Knesset and served as Vice Minister of Housing and Construction.
