Menashe Kadishman

Kadishman Menashe (Hebrew מנשה קדישמן; born August 21, 1932 in Tel Aviv) is an Israeli artist, painter and sculptor. He is one of the most important artists of Israel and lives in Tel Aviv.

Works

In 1968 Kadishman was with two metal and glass sculptures participants in the documenta 4 in Kassel in the Sculpture Department. He has been featured on several other biennials.

He was part of the first Nahmer West German sculptor symposium, the Sculpture Symposium Kaisersteinbruch, in 1961 Gaubüttelbrunn by Kirchheim in Lower Franconia.

At the Jewish Museum Berlin Kadishman installation Shalechet place ( Fallen Leaves ): There are about 10,000 iron plates on the ground, cut into the faces, open mouths like a scream. The visitors go about this in several layers lying faces, with a metallic sound.

In Brunswick, before the Dominican monastery stands with the sculpture Pieta another work Kadishman. From a thick steel plate he has, like cut out of a sheet of paper, the outline of a figure and bent at a 90 degree angle upwards. The photo shows a female figure, such as accusing wear on their arms stretched up the dead son.

In Salzgitter Menashe Kadishman is represented on the Sculpture Salzgitter-Bad in Salzgitter-Bad with a monumental steel sculpture The Kiss.

Another publicly accessible sculpture is exhibited at Schaumainkai in Frankfurt.

In Israel itself Kadishman is mainly known by the representation of people and sheep. This is an allusion to the story in the Old Testament, according to Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac at God's command. The man, his son ( himself ) sacrifices for God (cf. Sacrifice of Isaac ), for Kadishman this seems to be the way of salvation. This puts his picture Way to Eden near ( to paradise ), which is a sheep as a guardian of the path ( Cherub = paradise guardian ).

Also Kadishman are known with oil on canvas painted sheep. In an exhibition in Israel, he has placed thousands of these sheep as herd.

In 1995 he was awarded the Israel Prize.
