Menghesteab Tesfamariam

Menghisteab Tesfamariam MCCJ (born 24 December 1948 in Berakit, Eritrea ) is a bishop of the Ethiopian Catholic Church and Diocesan Bishop of Asmara in Eritrea.

Life

Menghisteab Tesfamariam joined the Congregation of the Comboni Missionaries on 1 September 1971. He laid on June 25, 1973 his temporal and on 15 March 1978 from his eternal vows. He was consecrated on 18 February 1979 religious priests. Thereafter Tesfamariam was initially 1979-1985 parochial vicar in Namula in Uganda. It then joined from 1985 to 1990 a training activity for postulants of the Comboni Missionaries in Addis Ababa. From 1990, he completed a postgraduate course in Chicago and then took over from 1991 to 1996, the training of students of the Comboni Missionaries in Chicago. After his return to Asmara in 1996, he was mainly responsible in the diocese of Asmara for the coordination of pastoral work. His appointment as Bishop of Asmara on 25 June 2001. His predecessor in the episcopate Zekarias Yohannes gave him on 16 September 2001, the episcopal consecration, assisted him as co-consecrators the bishops Tesfamariam Bedho by Keren (Eritrea) and Luca Milesi OFM Cap Barentu (Eritrea ). Bishop Tesfamariam was Mitkonsekrator at Kidane Yebio Bishop of Keren.

The situation in Africa

2009 Bishop Tesfamariam by Pope Benedict XVI. the second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops ( October 4 to October 25 2009) on Africa appointed and invited to the member. In a contribution during this Synod for Africa Tesfamariam lamented the " conflicts, injustice, human rights violations, lack of religious freedom, persecution, exploitation of human and natural resources, the different types of diseases, poverty, unemployment, displacement and human trafficking on the African continent." His demands resulted in the prompt families to support, accelerate the formation and bundle the cooperation of all forces within the Church.
