Menzies Campbell

Sir Walter Menzies Campbell, CH, CBE, QC (short Ming Campbell, May 22nd, 1941 in Glasgow ) is Chancellor of the University of St Andrews, a Scottish member of the UK House of Commons and was from March 2006 to October 2007 Chairman of the Liberal Democrats, as the successor of Charles Kennedy. His second first name is / ' minis / spoken (see Menzies ).

Life

Menzies Campbell studied law at the University of Glasgow, where he became president of the University Union. He has degrees as LL.B. and MA. Later he also received a scholarship for a stay in Stanford. Campbell took part in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, reaching the British 4 x 400 - meter relay team in the final.

Campbell married in June 1970 Elspeth, Lady Grant - Suttie, daughter of Major General Roy Urquhart. The couple has no children, but his wife has a child from her previous marriage. In 2002, Campbell was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin 's lymphoma, but was healed after intensive chemotherapy of it.

Political career

In 1975 he became chairman of the Scottish Liberal. After three unsuccessful attempts, he was in 1987 elected to the House.

On 2 March 2006, he was elected to succeed Charles Kennedy as President of the Liberal Democrats. Opposition candidates were Chris Huhne and Simon Henry Ward Hughes. His positions are best described as socially liberal. So he calls lower taxation of labor at the expense of higher environmental taxes. Campbell and the Liberal Democrats are the only one of the three major British parties who oppose the war in Iraq categorically.

Menzies Campbell resigned as leader of the Liberal Democrats on 15 October 2007. His successor is Nick Clegg.
