Meppen is a settlement on municipal Wi area ( Unincorporated community ) in the south of Calhoun County in the U.S. state of Illinois. The village with about 200 inhabitants, was named after the nearby German town of Meppen in Emsland.

Geography

Meppen is located in the U.S. state of Illinois on a peninsula between the Mississippi River and the Illinois River in Calhoun County.

History

The community was founded in 1847 by Henry Kiel. The original population consisted largely of immigrants from the Emsland Börger. Until 1918, German was the common language in the community. In the 1960s, the place with Brussels was merged into an administrative district.

Personalities

Victor Hermann Balke, retired bishop of Crookston, was born in Meppen (Illinois ).
