Around the atrium are two inclined planes squirm in a style similar to the double helix of DNA form ( Trefoil ) from top to bottom. The resulting two tours start at the top and squirm a total of nine levels to the exit. From design to realization formed the basis of planning a three-dimensional data model that underwent 50 revisions during the construction period and a total of 35,000 work plans generated. 33 meters wide, column-free spaces which are to bear the burden of ten trucks are able to do the same architectural features as the doubly curved structural components: the so-called twists that were applied in this shape and size for the first time. History

Since 1923 the company has a comprehensive collection of vehicles. For 50 -year corporate anniversary, the Daimler -Benz AG established in 1936 Untertürkheim the first museum one that has since been expanded several times. Shown " Guide through the Untertürkheimer Museum of Daimler -Benz AG " in 1938, according to the eighteen vehicles of Daimler -Motoren-Gesellschaft, nine cars from Benz and six automobiles from Mercedes -Benz. Then there were nineteen engines (start engines, automotive, aircraft and marine engines ), three rail vehicles, a replica of the Daimler riding car and the motor boat "Marie" of 1888th 1949 came new themes to it. Thus, the existence of the racing department was handed over to the historic collection of vehicles, documents and other material. In the next few years, the collection and the increasing flow of visitors grew steadily.

In 1955, the planning for a new, large Daimler- Benz Museum as a separate building on the site of the work Untertürkheim. Construction began in 1958 in the middle of Untertürkheim. The planned by the architect Rolf Gutbier and Hans Kammerer new Daimler -Benz Museum was opened in 1961 for the 75th anniversary of the invention of the automobile. The default was a vacant lot of 72 × 46 meters. The museum therefore had to grow into the air to provide enough space. Thus, a museum with 42,000 cubic meters of enclosed space and was around 3,250 square meters museum space, of which 1,200 square meters of exhibition space. There were also 1,000 square feet of offices, 700 square feet of technical space and 1,200 square meters of underground garages and storage rooms. On the ground floor was right in the entrance hall in addition to the historical collection now also the current range of Mercedes -Benz to see. Arranged chronologically, the show was historic: the invention of the automobile and the history, the vehicles before 1926 had their place on the ground floor. Vehicles and chassis from Mercedes- Benz and engines for boats, trains and airplanes were on display on the first floor, the racing history was presented on the second floor.

The Daimler-Benz museum was closed in 1985. Reason was a comprehensive renovation, remodeling, and the basic redesign and expansion for the anniversary "100 Years of the Automobile" in 1986. 's Concept for the redesign of the architects Knut Lohr, Dieter Herrmann and HG Merz developed and implemented. The 25- year-old building was given a new front with continuous glass facade. The roofing of the inner courtyards of the enclosed space of the museum was expanded. The existing floors were so the character of Galleries. They were extended by ramps and bridges made of steel, which also served as an exhibition space and the launch of the collection. The exhibition area of the museum had grown to 5,760 square feet and offered a new approach to the collection. The racing history was installed to a large extent on the ramps leading from one floor to the next. Thus, the vehicles of motor racing were at a connecting moment that up to the second floor walk up spiraled as a dynamic spiral from the ground floor of the museum, from the earliest Daimler racing car up to the current competition vehicles. The visitor either chose a chronological tour of the exhibition, or he visited a selection of the 26 thematic priorities according to their interests.

Technical broke new ground with Daimler-Benz in 1986 with the introduction of audio information system that the visitor mediated information about the individual exhibits. The relevant text has been played by a flash memory. The 120 -second information was continuously output via infrared transmitter in a narrowly defined geographic area. The digital sound of the " sound - Stick" said audio guides are over 1986 films in the staging of the exhibition: So are old Motorsport films and documentaries for the " race " cinema has been edited.

Due to the limited space and the visitors unfriendly location within the factory premises, the company decided in 2000 to build a new museum on the edge of the factory premises.
