Merkit

The Merkits were a Mongolian tribe that played a major role in the era of Genghis Khan. They lived by hunting and fishing. A successor of Genghis Khan named Orda Khan († 1280 ) and the first ruler of the Horde - Orda ( Orda's Khanate or White Horde) ruled large parts of Siberia up to the Irtysh, especially the former Khanate of Turkish Kimek and Quangli.

There are known the following clans:

  • Chakhat under Khagatai Darmala Khan
  • Uduyit under Toghtoga In Khan
  • Uwa, under Dayir Uzun Khan

Geographical settlement

Their settlement area was the lower reaches of the Selenga / Senga, south of Lake Baikal. Neighboring peoples were the Keraits, the Naiman and Iskit - Sakha.

History

The people were, according to legend, once subjected to the Mongol Khan Kabul, so roughly 1130-1151.

Got time certificates, including the Secret History of the Mongols describe selective military and other stories from the former era. So was looted by Yesügai Batur Prince Bride, Hoelun, a Merkitin and the mother of Genghis Khan. This led in later years for robbery of Bortai, the bride of the Khan by the Merkits. Their son Jochi ( the stranger ) may have been the son of a Merkits - Prince, but was later again accepted by Genghis Khan as firstborn.

Parts of the people were in 1205 the Mongols connected, while the ruling class fled across the taiga to Turkestan to be made, according to reports in 1217 on Tschüi and destroyed.
