Merthyr Tydfil FC

The Merthyr Tydfil Football Club was a Welsh football club based in Merthyr Tydfil, who played in the English leagues pyramid, until he was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2010. The new name of the association is Merthyr Town FC.

History

The Merthyr Tydfil FC was founded in 1945. It consists not affiliated with any football club of the same name that existed between the two world wars in place. Merthyr Tydfil joined the English Southern League, and was the Premier Division win total of six times (1948, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1954, 1989). The last victory meant on the one hand the most championships in this league ( a record shared with Southampton FC ), and an approval for the Football Conference, the highest ever reached League of the Association. As of 1995, Merthyr Tydfil, however, was playing in the Southern League.

Cup competitions

As Wales until 1992 had no own football leagues, all teams playing in the English league pyramid. These were allowed to participate in two cup competitions, the English and the Welsh. During the English Cup Round 2, the best result was Merthyr Tydfil won the Welsh Cup three times: in 1949, 1951 and 1987.

The victory in 1987 this meant qualification for the European Cup Winners' Cup. Merthyr Tydfil was playing in the Southern League Premier Division, the seventh level of the English leagues system, and is the niedrigstklassige club who has ever attended a football European Cup competition. Merthyr Tydfil difference in the first round against the Italian representatives Atalanta Bergamo, himself a second division, according to a surprising 2-1 first leg victory and a 0-2 defeat in Italy.

Merthyr Tydfil remained even after the creation of a Welsh league pyramid in 1992 in the English system was therefore entitled to participate only in English competitions and could also have only qualify for these international competitions.
