Meshech

Meshech or Meshech was a son of Japheth and grandson of Noah. His brothers were Madai, Gomer, Magog, Javan, Tubal, and Tiras (Gen 10.2 EU). These brothers are assigned to tribal areas or peoples.

Meshech is often used in the Bible in pairing with Tubal. Both peoples are from midnight, so the north. A geographical proximity may therefore be assumed. For example, Ezekiel uses both names several times as a region name and puts them in relation with Gog:

The output of the Gog'schen the venture was disastrous for the country Meshech:

Localization

In modern times the localization of Meshech was controversial. The priest W. crutch she sat with the Massagetae, Alans and Tatars same. 1897 Morris Jastrow put the muski ( he prefers the reading Muski ) of the Inscriptions of Khorsabad and the annals of Sargon with the Biblical Meshech equal and assumed that it was located in the Taurus Mountains.

Some researchers put the Mushki with the Moschoi ( Μόσχοι ) Greek sources the same, which in turn identified Josephus with the biblical Meshech. The equation of Meshech with the Moschern followed, among others, Samuel Bochart, Johann David Michaelis and Johannes Schulthess. The Mushki are today usually equated with the Phrygians, Gog with Gyges accordingly.
