Meta Department

The Departamento del Meta is a province in the geographical center of Colombia, named after the draining to the Orinoco river Río Meta. The department has about Austria's surface and extends from the Colombian capital Bogota each about 300 km to the south and east.

Its neighboring provinces are:

• Vichada in the east and Vaupés / Guaviare in the south,
• Caquetá and Huila in the southwest in the west,
• And to the north the capital, Santa Fe de Bogotá, Cundinamarca and its surrounding province of Casanare.

Landscape

Geographically meta comprises the hills and table land in the middle and upper reaches of the Rio Meta and Guaviare (or its tributary Ariari ) belonging to the western basin of the Orinoco. In the east of the province also are the sources of the Vichada and Uva, as well as in the mountainous west - in the Andes mountain chain upstream - the Macarena National Park.

The predestined for livestock tableland can largely be attributed to the type of landscape of the Llanos. Almost all of its rivers and streams flow in an easterly direction ( northeast to southeast ), where lower the neighboring provinces to the Orinoco lowlands.

The economy is based on agriculture and husbandry of cattle. On crops of rice, corn, bananas and sorghum are grown. The industry plays - apart from oil production - a subordinate role and is mainly located in and around Villavicencio.
