Metallic tower of Fourvière
The Fourvière Basilique is a landmark of Lyon. He is the Eiffel Tower in imitation of steel lattice tower with a height of 85.9 meters and a weight of 210 tons, built in 1892-1894, designed by Gustave Eiffel. Up to 1 November 1953, he served as a lookout, today he is a - not accessible to the public - transmission tower.
Historical Background
The tower was built by the private sector, a restaurateur named Gay, on the occasion of the great Lyon Exhibition of 1894, was and is but as a conscious punctuation of the republican, secular faction of citizenship and challenge of the symbol of the conservative Catholic circles that the adjacent St Mary's Basilica had erected of Notre -Dame de Fourvière.
