Metropolitan Borough of Dudley

Dudley is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of West Midlands in England. Administrative center is the city of Dudley, in about two-thirds of the population lives. Other important towns in the district are Amblecote, Brierley Hill, Coseley, Halesowen, Sedgley and Stourbridge.

The town of Dudley was originally an exclave of Worcestershire, while the surrounding villages belonged to Staffordshire. However, these were amalgamated in 1966 and thus Dudley came to the county of Staffordshire. The existing boundaries of the district today were established on 1 April 1974 as part of a far-reaching local government reform. The former County Borough of Dudley was merged with the boroughs of Halesowen and Stourbridge.

1986 Dudley was in fact a Unitary Authority, as the central government dissolved the superordinate management the county of West Midlands. Dudley was for ceremonial purposes part of West Midlands, and also for individual higher-level tasks such as police, fire and public transport.
