Mettlach

Mettlach is a municipality in the district Merzig- Wadern (Saarland ) with 10 districts. On the origin of the name, there are several explanations. According to the prevailing opinion, he goes back to the Romano- Celtic * Metallacum, which in turn is derived from the Roman personal name Metilius. Geography

Geographical location

Mettlach is located on the Saar loop and extends west to Saargau. In the north the municipality extends to the Rhineland-Palatinate border. The town of Merzig is just 8 km away, while the town of Saarbrücken is 50 km away. The city of Luxembourg is 40 km away, as well as Trier. According to Metz is 70 km.

Almost half of the municipal area ( 49.8 %) is covered by forest, 41.2 % of the area is used for agriculture, only 9% is built-up area. The lowest point is at 154 m above sea Saarhölzbach. NN, the highest altitude point is the Jewish brain in Saarhölzbach at around 500 m above sea level. NN. History

To 676 founded the Frankish Duke Lutwinus, who later became Bishop of Trier, an abbey on the site of the present hamlet of Mettlach. About 990 Abbot Lioffin built a Marienkirche Church as grave of the founder. This church in the form of an octagon ( based on the model of the Aachen Cathedral) is today known as the Old Tower and represents the oldest building of the Saarland see also Castle Saarstein

The present abbey buildings date from the 18th century and were taken over in 1801 by Jean -François Boch in the course of secularization. They accommodate up to now the headquarters of Villeroy & Boch. On 13 August 1921, the buildings were heavily damaged by a major fire (see pictures in the gallery below ).

The first bridge connecting Mettlach with Keuchingen, was completed in December 1886. It was funded by Villeroy & Boch, and was initially a toll. As the bridge in the 1930s was no longer cope with the increased traffic, it was replaced by a new building. This inaugurated on November 15, 1936 bridge was destroyed in the Second World War. It was only on 24 December 1951, the new suspension bridge was handed over by Prime Minister John Hoffmann circulation.

District Mettlach

The district Mettlach has 3146 inhabitants (as of December 2009) and an area of 9.54 km ². He is 159-388 m above sea level. Mettlach is located at the output of the Saar loop on both sides of the Saar.

Economy and infrastructure

Since the 1980s, tourism in Mettlach is gaining in importance; accommodation capacity of the municipality lies at 1,400 beds.

Traffic

Mettlach is located on the Saarstrecke Saarbrücken and Trier. Every hour at the railway stations Mettlach and Saarhölzbach holds the regional train Homburg -Saarbrücken and Trier DB Regio AG. Mettlach is connected with the Saar to the European waterway network. At the western edge there is a large modern lock among other for cargo vessels that supply mainly the Saarland steel sites with coal.

Mettlach is the headquarters of the ceramics company Villeroy & Boch and the company Lands' End, the ( Outlet Store ) operates a retail store in Mettlach German headquarters.

Mettlach is located on the hiking trails Saarland circular trail and Saar -Hunsrück -Steig. Also a section of the Hunsrück- Steig height ( Orscholz - Mettlach- Saarhölzbach ) performs Mettlach.
