Mexican Museum

El Museo Mexicano or The Mexican Museum (German: The Mexican Museum ) is a museum in San Francisco, which was founded in 1975 by artist Peter Rodriguez.

The original goal was "to exhibit the aesthetic expression of Mexicans and Mexican Americans," the in this museum. An additional factor was also art of Latinos and Chicanos. The museum was the first of its kind outside of Mexico. Today, the museum, which in 1982 moved its headquarters to Fort Mason Center on San Francisco 's Mission District has over 12,000 exhibits.

2001, the decision was taken to relocate the museum permanently in San Francisco 's Yerba Buena Arts District. The new building was designed by Ricardo Legorreta, whose work was awarded the 2006 Design Award of the Society of American Registered Architects ( SARA).
