Meyer Kayserling

Meyer Kayserling (also: Meir and Moritz Kayserling; born June 17, 1829 in Gleidingen ( near Hannover ), † April 21, 1905 in Budapest ) was a German rabbi and historian, who has worked in particular on literature and history of the Sephardic Jews.

Life

His education and training he acquired in Halberstadt, Mikulov, Prague, Würzburg and Berlin, and then to devote himself to history and philosophy. From Leopold von Ranke confirmed in his historical studies, he focused on the history and literature of the Iberian Peninsula, although he was interested in the proportion of Jews in the discovery of America.

In 1861 he was appointed by the Aargau cantonal government rabbi of Endingen and Lengnau and practiced until 1870 from the Office. During his time in Switzerland, he developed great activities for the emancipation of the Jews, and therefore had to fend off strong attacks. In 1870 he accepted an appointment as rabbi of Pest.
