Michael A. Epstein

Sir Michael Anthony Epstein CBE ( born May 18, 1921 in London ) is an English virologist. In 1964 he discovered his co-workers Yvonne M. Barr and Bert Achong G. in cell cultures of African Burkitt's lymphoma which later named as Epstein- Barr virus.

Life and work

Epstein studied at the St. Paul 's School, London, Trinity College, University of Cambridge and at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School.

He was from 1968 to 1985 professor of pathology at the University of Bristol and thereby to 1983 Head of the Department.

1973 Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize he was awarded. In 1979 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. From 1986 to 1991 he was Vice- President of the Royal Society. In 1985 he was appointed Commander of the British Empire and knighted in 1991. In 1988 he received a Gairdner Foundation International Award.
