Michael Alexander (bishop)

Michael Solomon Alexander ( born May 1, 1799 in Schönlanke, Poznan, † November 23, 1845 in Bilbeis in Cairo ) was the first Protestant Bishop of Jerusalem.

Alexander was a Jew and was first rabbi, but converted to Christianity and was baptized in 1825 in Plymouth. Since 1827 an Anglican priest, he worked until 1830 in the service of the Mission Society Church's Ministry Among Jewish People ( CMJ ) in Gdansk and was then professor of Hebrew and rabbinical literature at King's College London. On January 21, 1842 he took office as the first bishop of the company founded in 1841 Anglo- Prussian bishopric of Jerusalem.

His successor was Samuel Gobat.
