Michael Galasso

Michael John Galasso ( born April 5, 1949 in Hammond, Louisiana; † 9 September 2009 in Paris, France) was an American composer.

Biography

Michael John Galasso was the son of Dr. Michael A. Galasso Galasso and Michaela Williams. While his father was a violinist and concertmaster of the Baton Rouge Symphony, his mother played oboe with the same orchestra. His father later became a music professor at Louisiana State University and his mother took care of as a director at the Montessori Children 's House Baton Rouge. Michael Galasso learned at the age of three years, the violin and was already playing at the age of 11 years, his first solo concert with the New Orleans Philharmonic. Later he studied at Oberlin College and the Dartmouth College Music.

From the 1970s composed Galasso for more than a dozen theater productions of the American theater director and artist Robert Wilson music. These included music for performances of A Letter for Queen Victoria and Les Fables de La Fontaine. His debut as a film composer was Galasso 1981 for the Swiss Film Seuls. From the turn of the millennium he wrote regularly for international productions such as In the Mood for Love, Waiting for the Clouds and things that hang from trees. For his soundtrack to the biopic Séraphine Galasso was honored at the award ceremony of the French César Film Awards in 2009 with a nomination for Best Original Score.

On 9 September 2009 Galasso passed away in his Paris home of complications from hepatitis C disease. He left behind his wife and a daughter, the dancer and choreographer Catherine Galasso.
