Michael Korstick

Michael Korstick ( born April 30, 1955 in Cologne ) is a German pianist.

Life

Michael Korstick received his first piano lessons at age nine. Already at the age of eleven he won the first prize at " Young Musicians ". After high school he studied with Jürgen Tröster in Cologne and Hans Leygraf in Hanover. In 1974, he met at a master class of the Russian pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva, with whom he worked repeatedly in the following years. He made his debut in 1975 with Beethoven's Piano Sonatas Op 106 and Op 111

1976 Korstick went to the USA and continued his training as a fellow at New York's Juilliard School continues, he also worked with Jeaneane Dowis the Aspen Music Festival. In 1976 he debuted in New York also with Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata Op 106 and the Diabelli Variations, Op 120 In the following seven years he brought his studies at the Juilliard School with Sascha Gorodnitzki to an end. As the winner of the " National Selection concerts by young artists " of the German Music Council in 1983, he returned back to Germany, where he began his regular concert career.

Korstick is now regarded as " one of the most important Beethoven interpreters of our time" ( Audiophile, Fono Forum ). His enormously varied repertoire includes 120 piano concertos, a large number of solo works from every era, including the cycle of the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven. He undertook numerous worldwide concert tours and played cyclical overall performances of the piano concertos of Beethoven, Brahms (often both concerts on the same night ), Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Bartók and Prokofiev.

A wide audience Korstick was known primarily for his recordings.

Meanwhile, Michael Korstick has produced more than 30 recordings for various labels, for which he was awarded, among others, the Echo Klassik 2005, the MIDEM Classical Award in Cannes in 2009 and five times the "Prize of the German Record Critics ."

Since the end of 2012 he lives and works in Bonn.
