Michael Perham (bishop)

Michael Francis Perham ( born November 8, 1947 in Dorchester ) is a British Anglican clergyman and in 2004 Bishop of Gloucester.

Life and career

Perham attended from 1959 to 1965 the Hardye 's School in Dorchester in the county of Dorset. He studied from 1971 to 1974 Theology at Keble College, University of Oxford. There he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1974 and 1978, a Master of Arts. In preparation for the priesthood, he attended from 1974 to 1976, the Ripon Theological College, Cuddesdon. He was ordained a deacon in 1977 and priest in 1976. From 1976 to 1981 he worked as an assistant curate at St Mary's in London's Addington, Croydon. From 1981 to 1984 he served as chaplain of the then Bishop of Winchester, John Taylor, works. From 1984 to 1992, Perham Rector and Dean (Team Rector ) of the deanery of Oakdale in Poole. Associations and Volunteering

Perham had also held during his church career numerous other offices in church organizations charitable institutions and other bodies. From 1979 to 1984 Perham was secretary of the Doctrine Commission of the Church of England. He was from 1986 to 2001 a member of the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England ( Liturgical Commission). From 1988 to 1992 he was a member of the Archdiocesan Commission for Church Music ( Archbishop 's Commission on Church Music). From 1989 to 1992, and since 1993 he is a member of the General Synod of the Anglican Church. From 1990 to 1997 he was chairman of the charitable organization PRACTICE. From 1994 to 2001 he was Chairman of the Cathedrals ' Liturgy Group. From 1996 to 2001 Perham belonged to the Cathedrals ' Fabric Commission for England. From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Archbishops' Council of the Church of England ( Archbishops Council of the Church of England). From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the Church Heritage Forum.

From 2000 to 2004 he was a Fellow of the Woodard Corporation, which operates a network of Anglican schools. From 2001 to 2004 he was Chairman of the Business Committee of the General Synod of the Church of England. Since 2002 he has been a board member of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge ( SPCK ), which is dedicated to the promotion of the Christian faith, and since 2006 its chairman.

Since 2004, Perham director of Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, and since 2005 President of the Alcuin Club. He is Bishop Protector of the European Province of the Society of Saint Francis Also since 2005. From 2007 to 2009 he was Chairman of the Hospital Chaplaincies Council. Since 2007 he has been Deputy Chairman of the Mission and Public Affairs Council of the Church of England, President of the Retired Clergy Association and Vice-Rector of the Board of the University of Gloucestershire ( Council of the University of Gloucester). Since 2009 is member of the Perham Department of Health Advisory Board as part of the End of Life Care Programme and Chairman of the Board of Ripon College Cuddesdon.

In 2003 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music. In 2007 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Gloucester awarded.

Membership in the House of Lords

Perham heard since October 27, 2009 as minister Lord the House of Lords. His inaugural speech is still pending (as of December 2009). He succeeds Kenneth Stevenson, who resigned for health reasons, the Bishop of Portsmouth. In July 2008, Perham held at a formal worship for 60 years of existence, the National Health Service a sermon in Westminster Abbey. Perham was on 7 October 2008 at the signatories of a declaration that called for the protection of children against mental and physical violence.

The end of 2008 Perham initiated on the diocesan level intensive pastoral cooperation of the diocese of Gloucester with the Diocese of Western Tanzania in Tanzania and the Diocese of El Camino Real in the United States. He later signed a partnership agreement. In spring 2009, Perham took a trip to Tanzania to deepen existing contacts. In summer 2009, Perham visited the partner diocese in California.
