Michael Redmond (Go player)

Michael Redmond ( born May 25, 1963 in Santa Barbara, California, USA) is a professional American Go players and one of the few professionals in this Western dominated by East Asian players sport. He published Go- literature, worked as a commentator for the channel NHK and sponsors many activities around the game of Go, such as the Redmond Cup.

He is regarded as the world's one of the strongest Go player and holds the professional 9 -dan, a player in the Go the highest possible rating since 2000. He was the first Western Go players ever to reach this rank.

Biography

Michael Redmond began at the age of 11 years with the Go- games and finished with a 14 InseI ( students) at the Nihon Ki- in in Japan. With 18 years of his first professional Dan Rank was awarded the 2nd professional Dan followed in the same year. He received his 5th Dan Contributor 1985, 8 professional Dan in 1996 and the ninth and last in 2000.

In his career, Michael Redmond has not won a title, but finished 1990 ranked second in the NEC Shun -Ei 1992 and second place in the Shinjin -O. He also reached the semifinals in each case the Fujitsu Cup, the Tong Yang Cup and the Gosei tournament ( 2006). In 2010 he succeeded in the 36th Tengen tournament of the way into the quarter-finals. In the same year he beat Cho U in the first round of the 17th Agon tournament.

In August 2006, he taught at the AGA East Coast Go Camp in Pennsylvania and participated in the 22nd annual U.S. Go Congress in Black Mountain, the U.S. state of North Carolina, in part.

For his commentators activity of Go - games, he was voted best commentator of the channel NHK in 2005.

Personal

Michael Redmond is married to the Chinese professional Go player Niu Xian Xian. The couple has two daughters. He lives in Tokyo, Japan.
