Michel Sabbah

Michel Sabbah (Arabic ميشيل صباح, DMG misil Sabbah, born March 19, 1933, Nazareth ) is a Palestinian Catholic theologian and emeritus Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

Life

Sabbah attended school Frères des Ecoles Chrétiennes in Nazareth and then ( from 1943) the Latin Patriarchalseminar in Bait Dschala. On June 28, 1955, he was consecrated by Patriarch Alberto Gori in the Salesian church in Nazareth as a priest. Subsequently, he worked as a parish priest in Madaba / Jordan, since 1971 at the Christ the King Church in Amman. In 1973 he received his doctorate at the Sorbonne Doctor of Arabic philology from 1979 to 1987 he was president of the University of Bethlehem.

Among other high Christian dignitaries in the Holy Land as Munib Younan he is one of the signatories of the so-called Kairos Palestine document dated December 2009, which condemned the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories as a " sin against God " and to the urgency of peace and justice for Palestine will be remembered.

Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem

On 11 December 1987 John Paul II appointed him to the Patriarch of Jerusalem and personally gave him a bishop on January 6, 1988 at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. In 2005 he received a coadjutor in the person of Archbishop Fouad Twal. On 19 March 2008 he submitted to the Vatican in his resignation from the office of patriarch. On June 21, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. Sabbah on the grounds of age pre- mounted resignation. The already appointed Coadjutor Fouad Twal became his successor.

Since 1988, Sabbah is also chairman of the " Catholic Family " in the Middle East Council of Churches. He is also chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Arab Region ( CELERA ) and Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour ( since 2005). From 1999 to 2007 he was chairman of Pax Christi International.

Michel Sabbah was the first Palestinians to the throne of the Latin Patriarchate and has repeatedly committed itself to the cause of his people in the Palestine conflict. Through its political presence, but also because his orthodox colleague Theophilus has since not recognized by Israel nor Jordan, Sabbah became one of the most important representatives of the Palestinian Christians.

Michel Sabbah was as Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Grand Prior of the Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.
