Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz

Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz (* 1913 in Waloschyn, † June 27, 2011 in Jerusalem) was an Israeli ultra-Orthodox rabbi of the Lithuanian direction. He was head of the school department of the Yeshiva in Bnei Brak Ponevezh and a member of the Rabbinical Council of the ultra-Orthodox Degel HaTorah political party.

Life

Lefkowitz came from Lithuania, then to Russia, now Belarus belonging Wolozin. He was first taught by his father and then attended the Ramailes yeshivah in Vilna, where he studied under Shlomo Heiman, whose writings he edited later.

1936 immigrated to Palestine Lefkowitz and studied at the Yeshiva Chevron in Jerusalem. He then became head of the school department of the Yeshiva Ponevezh, one of the leading Lithuanian yeshivot in Israel, where he taught for over fifty years.

Lefkowitz was one of the Israeli rabbis, who provided the uprisings in the Arab world of late 2010/early 2011 with a religious Jewish interpretation, as the forest fires in Israel from December 2010: " First, God has punished Israel with a fire and a country that is feels big and powerful, was suddenly in need of help from around the world. As they talked ... wise and all-knowing [ the political leaders of Israel and its allies ] is, God has stirred up the nations. And so they [the leaders ] because in turn scared because they could not foresee these things and do not know what to do. God laughs at them, waiting for them to understand his message and become more intelligent. "

Lefkowitz died at the age of 97 years in Jerusalem, and was buried in Bnei Brak. At his funeral, tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews took part.
