Michelangelo Tilli

Michelangelo Tilli ( born April 10, 1655 in Castel Fiorentino, † March 13, 1740 in Pisa ) was an Italian physician and botanist.

Life

Michelangelo Tilli is the son of Desiderio Tilli and Lugrezia Salvadori.

In 1677 he was Pisa Doctor of Medicine at the University. He opened a practice in Florence and worked from 1681 to the led as a doctor on the ship routes from Florence to Mallorca and Menorca.

In 1683 he traveled to Constantinople to treat IV Opel and Opel Adrian to the son of Sultan Mehmed. During the return journey, which led him through the Aegean Sea, he made notes on the natural history of the Aegean.

In 1685 he became professor of botany at the University of Pisa and head of the company founded by Luca Ghini Botanical Gardens. To expand the plant collection he received from his correspondents at the Botanical Garden in Amsterdam many rare species.

On November 30, 1708 he became a member of the Royal Society.

1723 published the Catalogus Plantarum Horti Michelangelo Tilli Pisani. The list of cultivated plants in the Botanical Garden of Pisa includes more than 4,500 entries and is the Grand Duke Cosimo III. dedicated de Medici. 50 species in the catalog are illustrated with drawings by Cosimo Mogalli.

Ehrentaxon

Pier Antonio Micheli named in his honor the genus Tillaea the plant family Crassulaceae ( Crassulaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name. Today, it is incorporated into the genus Crassula ( Crassula ).
