Middleport is a village in Meigs County, Ohio, United States. It is located in Southeastern Ohio on the west bank of the Ohio River between the ports of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. The population was 2,525 inhabitants at the census in 2000.

Geography

Due to its location on the river Ohio Middleport became soon an important role as a stopover for river navigation. There was coal resources in the vicinity which steamboats could be supplied here with coal.

The neighboring communities are on the river upstream and downstream of Pomeroy and Syracuse Addison. On the opposite bank is the city of Mason in Mason County, West Virginia.

History

Middleport owes its name to the fact that it is the middle port between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati on the Ohio River.

Education

The schools of Middleport belong to the Meigs Local School District. The municipal area is a campus of the University of Rio Grande. Eleven other colleges and universities are located within a radius of 60 miles ( about 100 km).

Famous people

Middleport was the home of Walter "Mother" Watson, a baseball pitcher in Major League.
