Middlesex and Boston Street Railway

The Middlesex and Boston Street Railway (M & B) was a tram and later bus company in the west of the city of Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. The trams of society drove most recently in 1930. M & B was founded in 1972 with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority ( MBTA ) merged.

History

The company was founded as Natick Electric Street Railway on 10 August 1891, renamed in 1893 in South Middlesex Street Railway. After the bankruptcy, a bankruptcy administrator appointed on May 6, 1903 which sold the remnants of the company on August 15, 1907 the newly formed Middlesex and Boston Street Railway. 1910 bought the holding Boston Suburban Electric Companies M & B with all company segments.

In September 1964, the MBTA began with the subsidization of M & B and assigned line numbers to their buses. An agreement to promote M & B by the MBTA was signed on 23 December 1964. On July 5, 1972 was followed by the complete takeover of M & B by the MBTA after the M & B had ceased operations on 30 June of the same year after disputes over subsidies. The acquired lines have been renumbered by the number " 5" was placed at the beginning. 1982 and 1996 they were renumbered again.

Today there are a Lexington- tramcar (# 41) and an ACF Brill Bus from the year 1948 ( # 192) who were saved from the time of M & B. Both can be seen in the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport.

Former lines of M & B

Auburndale Lake Street via Commonwealth Avenue

The Commonwealth Avenue Street Railway opened in 1895 was incorporated on 1 January 1904 in the Newton Street Railway; this in turn merged July 1, 1909 with M & B. The line ran along the entire length of the parting strip Commonwealth Avenue in Newton from Norumbega Park at the western end to a connection to the Boston Elevated Railway in the Lake Street at the eastern end, where today the Green Line B ends at the station Boston College.

Opened on June 17, 1897 Norumbega Park was an amusement park that was built by the M & B to increase the number of passengers on its tramways. The park closed in 1964, long after the last tram of the M & B had been replaced by buses in 1930.

The last time this was the bus route 35 Auburndale Lake Street, which was the takeover by the MBTA for 535 Auburndale Boston College via Commonwealth Avenue. The MBTA buses on this line only drove during rush hour from January 1973 and the setting of the line in 1976.

Bedford - Lowell

The tariff borders ran along the city limits of Bedford Lexington, Concord and Billerica.

From Lexington from led the line on the Bedford Street and Great Road in order to connect through the Loomis Street and South Road to the station of the Boston and Maine Railroad. A siding was located on the north side of Bedford Common.

In Lexington, there were analogous to Norumbega Park is also a theme park to increase the number of passengers on the line.

Bedford Concord

The line has now no longer equivalent.

Lexington Woburn

The line led by the Massachusetts Avenue in Lexington on the Woburn Street and Lexington Street to B & M station in Woburn.

Waltham Center Lexington Center

Waltham -Newton

The Waltham and Newton Street Railway was founded on July 13, 1866 and adopted on August 31, 1868 to operate on. Their tracks led west of Waltham on the streets Main, Moody and Crescent up to the line in Newton. From there we went on the streets Lexington, River, Elm and Washington to the terminus at the Highland Street in Newton.

In 1889 Newton Street Railway bought the line and bought himself on July 1, 1909 by M & B. From the line later became a large part of the bus line 20 Newton Corner - Riverside via Roberts and Central Square Waltham, which is now driven by the line 553 Roberts -Downtown Boston via Newton Corner and Central Square Waltham.
